Do you want to contribute to COVID-19 research and help keep the UBC campus safer by identifying asymptomatic COVID positive cases?
Health Canada has asked UBC to do a clinical trial of the Roche SARS-CoV-2 Rapid Antigen Test (Nasal) to confirm that adults can administer the test themselves, in the hope that the product could be more widely used across Canada, without the supervision of a Healthcare Professional. UBC will do this by having participants use the swab themselves, and the Clinical Team on-site will complete follow up swabs, supervise and collect data. This means that your first testing process will take approximately 50 minutes and will include registering for a Thrive Health account and completing a series of surveys. All subsequent appointments will take 20-30 minutes. As space allows, you can book a test once per week. The survey component is one-time only.
The new clinic opened Wednesday, May 26, 2021 and is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Participation is voluntary, and not a condition of working or studying on campus. Participants will be asked to give their consent, and UBC HR has notified associations and unions of the trial. Personal information gathered will be used for research only. UBC employees can participate in the program without a loss of pay.
New Eligibility Criteria: as long as you meet the other eligibility criteria, anyone can participate regardless of whether they’ve had any doses of the COVID-19 Vaccine or not.
How it Works
- Register for a Thrive Health account using your registration code (UBC-RapidTest2) and schedule your appointments online. There are surveys to complete on UBC Qualtrics related to your first visit at the clinic.
- On the day o
f your appointment, you’ll be asked to verify your identity and eligibility, and be directed into the sampling room by the clinical team. Please bring your student/employee UBCcard, your Provincial Health Insurance Number and reading glasses if required. - In the sampling room you will read instructions about how to swab your own nose (only 2 centimetres inside); once you have followed all the steps, a clinical team member will direct you to the waiting room. Here’s a useful video that explains the self‑swabbing process.
- Research: During your first visit a nurse will confirm the accuracy of your self-swab by administering another rapid swab (same test and method) or a PCR test. Note that you always have the option to decline a research PCR swab, but they are required if the rapid screen result returns a positive result.
- Enjoy tasty snacks while taking a follow-up survey and waiting 15 minutes. Total testing time is 30 minutes. First 700 research participants will receive a $5 Starbucks or Tim Hortons Gift Card.
